Skin care management in cancer patients: an evaluation of quality of life and tolerability

Ann Cameron Haley, Cara Calahan, Mona Gandhi, Dennis P. West, Alfred Rademaker and Mario E. Lacouture

    Abstract

    Purpose

The objective of this study is to evaluate quality of life (QoL) and tolerability of three articles specifically developed for cancer skin care management (skin moisturizer, face moisturizer, and face wash).

    Methods

Participants were cancer patients (n = 99) receiving systemic anticancer therapies and/or radiotherapy at Northwestern University. Subjects were assessed at the initial visit for adverse skin reactions based on the National Cancer Institute’s Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 3.0 and completed the Skindex-16 questionnaire, a self-reported dermatology-specific QoL instrument. All subjects were provided with three test articles and were instructed to use each test article once daily for 4 weeks. At the 4-week follow-up (n = 77), the Skindex-16 was readministered, adverse skin reactions were assessed, and tolerability questionnaires were administered for each article used.

    Results

Dry skin, hand–foot skin reaction (HFSR), and skin rash (dermatitis) decreased significantly from baseline to follow-up. Presence of nail changes, skin rash (desquamation), and acne/acneiform eruptions did not significantly change from baseline. Subjects had a significantly lower mean overall Skindex-16 score at 4-week follow-up when compared to baseline. Most patients rated their overall experience with each test article as good or very good (highest rating).

    Conclusion

Skin care in cancer patients is suboptimal in part due to a lack of products and knowledge specific for this population. Our findings suggest that Quality of Life improves with test article use, all of which were rated as good/very good for tolerability. Moreover, skin toxicity as manifested by dry skin, hand-foot skin reaction, and skin rash (dermatitis) were decreased with use of test articles within 4 weeks.

  • A Woman with a Vision: Lindy Snider Creates Skin-Care Line for Cancer Patients (MassageMag.com)

Posted on April 11, 2011 by LindiSkin

April 11, 2011 (MassageMag.comoriginal link) - Cancer isn't pretty, but a woman's wish to feel beautiful doesn't end when treatment begins. How do you redefine beauty in light of cancer?

In the ever-expanding world of beauty, skin-care specialists are rethinking their role. Providing the usual services of massage, manicures, pedicures and hydrating of "normal" skin is great, but sometimes life throws us a curve. Illness strikes, and the simple pampering now becomes a struggle to regain and restore skin that has been damaged or depleted by illness, surgery and cancer. With recent studies reporting that more than 40 percent of Americans during their lifetime will hear the phrase, "You've got cancer," we cannot ignore this basic need.

Patients are well aware of the usual side effects of chemotherapy and radiation: nausea, hair loss and fatigue. But few realize what effect their treatment has on their skin–the largest organ of the body. The skin-related side effects from treating all types of cancer–acne-like rashes, extreme redness, dryness and inflammation--can be so debilitating, physically and emotionally, that patients will sometimes abandon their treatment.

Witnessing two of her closest friends experience these ravaging conditions, Lindy Snider searched the shelves. She found lotions, creams and gels for everything imaginable, but nothing that would provide relief for a cancer patient. Snider forged ahead.

Snider gathered a team of dermatologists, oncologists and patient focus groups. She researched to find the purest and most appropriate ingredients and developed the first full line of skin-care products designed to address these side effects. Her mission was to bring about a sense of relief and to renew, revitalize and restore skin during and after treatment.

Snider's skin proprietary "LSA Complex" of special botanicals and antioxidants was formulated to promote soothing wound comfort, and to be antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Her passion was to redefine beauty in the face of illness. Courage and bravery are needed in going through cancer, but pampering and continuing to feel and look your best are crucial to maintaining a sense of well-being.

Snider's vision in identifying the importance of addressing skin-related side effects is now widely-recognized in the medical community and hailed by doctors and oncology nurses throughout the country. Due to an emerging science called supportive onco-dermatology, studies show that taking care of their skin helps cancer patients feel more in control and it enhances their quality of life.

  • Improving the Lives of a Universal Clientele, Skin Care Line Caters to Cancer Patients' Unique Needs

Posted on December 1, 2010 by LindiSkin

    (FortWayne.comOriginal Article) December 1st, 2010

Unique skincare formulas throughout the ages have relieved many conditions at specific times of life. One routinely unmet need, however, has been that of individuals undergoing cancer treatment -- until now.
Hair loss and digestive ailments are well known side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, while intense skin rashes and burns are much more common, but lesser known side effects. Those experiencing these debilitating ailments have remained undercover in oncologist offices, cancer centers, support groups, and at home.

Lindy Snider, a skincare pioneer and advocate of skin wellness, has championed addressing these unique needs of cancer patients as well as anyone suffering from chronic dry skin. Her mission was driven home as she watched two friends, who were going through treatment, experience skin conditions so painful that their treatment and lives were seriously impacted.

Seeking the counsel of leading dermatologists and oncologists, Snider created Lindi Skin. This extensive collection of mild and luxurious serums, lotions and balms is the only full line of skincare products created for those suffering the skin side effects of specific cancer therapies.

"We have come to rely greatly on Lindi Skin products, especially the face serum," says Kim O'Neill, RN, OCN. "Without exception, patients have reported noticeable relief of the skin symptoms, both in physical comfort and in the severity of rashes or skin irritation."

Due to advances in treatment and the use of targeted therapies, cancer is no longer automatically labeled a terminal illness, but more so a chronic one. The need for moisturizing the skin during and after treatment becomes even more essential, as the skin's tone and elasticity have often changed forever. Lindi products continue to provide beneficial hydration so this unique clientele can feel pampered and in control.

"Even though I was sensitive to smells at the time, I found the light lavender scent of the Face Serum to be very pleasant and I loved the way my skin felt," says Rita, a cancer survivor. "I never had any dry skin, and in fact, I thought my skin improved somewhat by using the Face Serum."

Lindi Skin hydrates and pampers skin with an exclusive blend of botanical ingredients. These include natural, beneficial ingredients such as willow herb, white tea, lavender, red raspberry, pine bark, grape seed, tomato, cranberry, Echinacea, and tumeric to cleanse, moisturize and cool ailing skin and bring life and beauty back to its surface.

"Skin care should serve each stage of your life," says Snider. "The Lindi Skin mission is to build and maintain skin's wellness in sickness and in health ... for life."

Lindi Skin is available in more than 1,000 retail locations and hospitals throughout the country. To learn more about this line's exclusive benefits, essential products and places to purchase, please visit www.lindiskin.com.

  • Doctors & Nurses Testimonials About Lindi Skin, From ISSS

Posted on November 17, 2010 by LindiSkin

(International Spa & Salon ServicesOriginal Post)

I am a 56 year old neurologist with III-B NSCCa Lung on Tarceva with excellent response to date. Skin reaction has limited my dose to 100 mg. I am convinced that the sample of Lindi Skin Face Serum obtained from an oncology nurse that I have used daily for 3 weeks has considerable beneficial effect on the facial distribution of maculopapular EGFR dermatitis. I needed just enough improvement in my cutaneous side effects to pass through public places without shocked stares from individuals fearing exposure to a communicable disease.

    Larry Eisner, MD

    New York, NY

    ---------------------------------

My patient was started on Tarceva less than 2 weeks ago and when I saw her initially I was struck with the severity of the face rash which was markedly erythematous and acneiform and covered almost her entire face including her chin. I brought her the face serum and she immediately applied it. I saw her approximately 18 hours later and her face looked much less erythematous, in fact strikingly so.

Needless to say, she was extremely grateful and felt the product was just a miracle.

    Larry R. Kaiser, MD, FACS

    University of Pennsylvania Health System

    --------------------------------

Patients who have come in crying about the rash have called us the next day to thank us for the sample of Lindi Skin. Our patients have tried multiple products once this rash has appeared on their face, neck, upper torso, and sometimes scalp.

However, time and again, it is the Lindi product that alleviates or lessens the itch and, most importantly, decreases the erythema of the acne like rash that occurs in almost all patients receiving Erbitux. I have personally seen dramatic results in patients using Lindi Skin products in just one day.

    Kerry Frank, RN, BS

    Mount Pleasant, SC

    -------------------------------

I would like to express my extreme satisfaction with using the Lindi Skin Cooler Rolls and Cooler Pads. As the Nurse Coordinator for the Department of Radiation Oncology at a University Hospital, I have used these two products successfully with patients undergoing external beam radiation.

Most of the patients I have offered these products to have expressed great relief from their symptoms of burning and the tenderness in the treatment areas. We have had such great success with Lindi Skin products that we were able to convince the purchasing department to allow us to order these
    directly for our patients.

    Mary Dugan-Jordan, RN, MSN

    Philadelphia, PA

    --------------------------------

I have been an oncology nurse for 16 years and wanted to tell you how excited I am about Lindi Skin care. I spoke with several of the oncology nurses that I work with and they are equally excited.

Several of the nurses have already had very positive experiences with these products, especially those patients with the acne like rash. I had a patient come up to me today while I was talking with the nurses about your products and she said, "I am sorry to interrupt you but I had to tell you that I used the cooling gel wrap for radiation burns on my breast; it felt so good on my skin. It helped me get
    through treatment."

    Wendy Topeka, RN, BSN, OCN

    Voorhees, NJ

    --------------------------------

We had a lady come to interview us from "Living Magazine" who has rheumatoid arthritis. She bought the Bath Soak and used it last night. She already e-mailed me that she has needed nothing for pain since.

  • CBS Philly- "Local Magazine Recognizes 3 Women For Helping Cancer Patients"

Posted on October 8, 2010 by LindiSkin

Philadelphia, PA (CBS PhillyOriginal Article) October 8th, 2010

    LindySnyder_MLT

    From Mike Dougherty

(CBS) – Three women who are making strides helping cancer patients in different ways are among two dozen women recognized in this month’s issue of Main Line Today magazine for making a difference in their communities.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but Lindy Snider (above) says she looks at cancer as a year-long battle. The daughter of Comcast Spectacor chairman Ed Snider runs Lindi Skin, a line of skin care products for patients receiving chemotherapy, radiation, and other cancer treatments.

The Bryn Mawr mom was recently treated for thyroid cancer:

“I’m no longer an outsider. I’m an insider and coming from that perspective, the fact of the matter is, it’s a lonely process and it makes me more committed to reaching out even in more ways.”

She says a lot of people give up on cancer treatments because of the effect it has on their skin. The magazine also recognized Robin Cohen and Adriana Way, co-founders of the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation, which has been working for ten years to find an early detection test for the deadly disease.

  • TLC Skin Care for Cancer Treatment Patients

Posted on October 1, 2010 by LindiSkin

(Beauty News LAOriginal Article) October 1st, 2010

    By Willette Francis

    tlc.jpg

Each year millions of people are affected by cancer. Last year, The American Cancer Society estimated that over 1.4 million people would be diagnosed and of these cases almost half were women. Once diagnosed, many will undergo cancer treatments to cure the disease and will endure chemotherapy, radiation and/or surgery.

While chemotherapy and radiation eradicates rapidly dividing cancer cells, it also destroys healthy cells, which causes physical changes to the body including the skin. ”Changes in the skin may include partial or total hair loss, thin shiny skin, flakey, irritated, itchy, red or hypersensitive skin” says Dr. Charlene DeHaven, Clinical Director, Innovative Skincare. The changing physical appearance caused by treatment begins to affect patients emotionally. Dr Haven describes the feelings that cancer treatment patients experience as, “perceived loss of beauty” and “additionally, any pronounced change in the body (either in energy, emotional state and certainly appearance which can be seen by the world) results in feelings of loss or grief.”

To address these changes, alleviate skin concerns and help regain a sense of beauty and self-confidence, skin care brands, Lindi Skin and iS Clinical, a line of Innovative Skincare have been created with the cancer treatment patient in mind (but can be used by anyone who has special skincare needs as well). These products avoid harsh ingredients and are very gentle which are essential qualities that are extremely important during cancer treatment.

    tlc_lindi.jpg

Lindi Skin is developed by CEO Lindy Snider, with the help of doctors, scientists and input from a cancer patient focus group. A combination of the best ingredients and extensive medical research help produce products that can provide relief from the adverse affects of cancer treatment on the skin, without the preservatives and fragrances commonly found among skin care brands and are a major source of skin irritations. Lindi Face Wash is great for dry and irritated skin caused by chemotherapy; it’s rich, moisturizing, soothing and a wonderful alternative for those allergic to soap and mild enough for a baby. You can follow the face wash with Lindi Face Serum or Lindi Face Moisturizer. The face serum is ultra-hydrating and relieves aggravated skin with a light hint of lavender, also available with a hint of citrus. The face moisturizer is for those with extremely dry skin, full of nutrients and anti-oxidants, non-greasy and feels like silk on the skin. In addition to face products, Lindi has a number of products for the body. The Lindi Body Wash continues to deliver moisturization after rinsing, is mild enough for compromised skin and great as a daily cleanser. Its moisturizing properties are enhanced when followed by Lindi Body Lotion or Lindi Soothing Balm. The body lotion helps the overall dryness that many people experience during cancer treatment and contains a unique blend of natural berry extracts. The balm remedies painful, cracked and peeling skin by providing intense treatment to those affected areas. All of the items mentioned and most of Lindi Skin’s products (except the Lindi Skin Cooler Pad and Cooler Roll and the sunscreens) contain LSA Complex that can only be found in their products and is a unique blend of soothing and nourishing botanicals, such as Astazanthin (marine extract) an anti-oxidant 50 times more potent than Vitamin E, Bisabolol (extract of chamomile) anti-irritant and Curcumin (extract of Turmeric) which promotes wound healing and an assortment of other botanicals with anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and anti-bacterial properties.
