Doctors: To reduce nausea & fatigue during cancer treatment... take care of your skin.

When doctors recommend chemotherapy, most people resign themselves to enduring the side effects of nausea, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. But doctors have recently made an exciting and unexpected discovery linking excellent skin care with fewer side effects. This study found lower rates of six typical chemotherapy side effects when attention was given to skin care before the patients' skin showed damage.

Could good skin care really help ease miserable symptoms like nausea and fatigue?  It appears the answer is: Yes.

Your skin is your body's largest organ so it only makes sense that healthy skin contributes to a healthy body. Skin helps keep dangerous bacteria and viruses out of your body and helps maintain a healthy balance of moisture and temperature. Obviously, dry and fragile skin can crack, opening up your body to invading germs. Infection prevention alone is reason enough to keep your skin in good condition while undergoing chemotherapy. But is there more?

A study of cancer skin care

Doctors compared two groups of people undergoing chemotherapy. One group received a prophylactic (or preventative) skin care treatment, and the other group, a reactive treatment plan, where skin problems were addressed as they came up.  The difference was remarkable. The patients who prevented skin damage had nearly half as many non-dermatological symptoms as those who only treated skin as damage showed up.

Six symptoms: Patients with prophylactic (preventative) skincare compared to patients without preventative skincare

  • Nausea-  5% compared to 10%
  • Vomiting- 5% compared to 10%
  • Fatigue- 10% compared to 12%
  • Diarrhea- 15% compared to 30%
  • Dehydration- 5% compared to 15%
  • Neutropenia (a lack of white blood cells which fight infection)- 10% compared to 25%

More research is needed to know exactly how proactive cancer skin care relates to these symptoms. It is not proven that this is a direct cause and effect. But skin is a large organ. If your body is struggling to heal damaged skin, less energy is available for the rest of the body. And if damaged skin provides an opening for infection, again, your body has less reserves for the more important fight it is waging.
